Week Ahead FX outlook:

  • Positioning matters as much as policy next week. With the Fed, BoJ and BoT broadly expected to keep policy unchanged, the bigger market catalyst is likely to be the guidance around the decisions. USD positioning has become increasingly long, while the options market has leaned toward JPY appreciation. This raises the risk of asymmetric moves: hawkish Fed guidance could extend the USD rally, but balanced guidance could trigger a positioning unwind and a broader tactical rebound in Asia FX.

  • The hurdle for another broad USD leg higher is rising. Long-USD positioning has built alongside the dollar, suggesting part of the bullish US rates and USD story is already reflected in markets. A hawkish Fed and renewed rise in Treasury yields would keep USD/Asia supported. But absent a meaningful hawkish surprise, crowded positioning creates greater scope for a tactical USD pullback. We would use that reprieve selectively rather than turn broadly bullish Asia FX.

  • JPY offers the clearest expression of a softer-USD scenario. USD/JPY remains below the key 160 area, while options positioning already favours downside in USD/JPY, albeit less aggressively than earlier episodes. A balanced Fed combined with a BoJ that avoids pushing back against future normalization could therefore support a USD/JPY correction.

  • We remain cautious on the Thai baht. An unchanged 1% BoT policy rate would leave Thailand with limited carry support, making THB particularly sensitive to US yields. Weak domestic growth also constrains the BoT's ability to deliver materially more rate support, while Thailand's energy-import dependence leaves the currency exposed to higher oil prices.

  • The broader strategy is selective across Asia FX. Let the Fed determine the USD beta, the BoJ determine the JPY expression, and the BoT sharpen relative value within Asia. We prefer currencies with stronger external buffers and structural inflows, while remaining defensive on currencies exposed to higher oil prices, weaker carry and external deficits.
